Most people arenβt born savvy travelers.
Sh*t happens. Itβs always good to have a backup, even if you're in your own country. What if you lose your card, or it's stolen? What if your bank thinks your transaction's location seems suspicious and puts a freeze on your card? You donβt want to be unable to access your funds, and stuck far from home. I always call my bank before I travel, but sometimes their automated systems still freeze my card. If I have a spare, I can just relax and enjoy the rest of my day then contact them after I get back to my accommodation.
The 10 essential holiday travel safety tips I swear by are:
Is there a street or area visitors should avoid? What kind of scams happen at your destination? Knowledge is power!
If you walk around dripping with jewlery, clothing and electronics that cost more than a local's annual salary... you are more likely to be noticed by professional criminals. If you want to travel safely, this isn't the time to bring out your bright and shiny things!
Being mugged? You don't want to risk your life for your passport or other ID! If you have a printed copy back at the hotel and one in the cloud, you'll be able to give them to the authorities or your Embassy and get new ones or other help. Keep a copy of your insurance, flights and other bookings too. If your phone is stolen, it can be difficult to access your cloud and email accounts etc quickly!
If you keep your family and friends updated, they'll know to raise the alarm if you suddenly go quiet.
Free public wi-fi isn't the smart place to do your internet banking or enter your credit card details for online shopping. If you have no choice, install a secure VPN (Virtual Private Network) before you travel so your data is encripted.
Leave the Do Not Disturb sign on your door when you're out. People are more likely to think you're inside. Using a small door jammer, close the blinds and lock the windows when you are inside will help you keep your hotel room secure. You can check for spy cameras using an app or by putting red cellophane over your mobile phone torch/flashlight.
If you feel uncomfortable with the way someone is acting towards you or a certain place makes you feel uneasy, trust your instincts and remove yourself from the situation. Keep an eye on your stuff and on the people around you.
These are mostly international travel safety tips, but you can apply the same ideas in your home country!
